The first one is there's a blurring of locations we see, which I'm guessing reality in this game is going to be more surreal and liquid, rather than physical. The trailer shows three main things to me. I imagine we'll see a lot more mechanical depth to the light combating the darkness mechanics in particular, they were a bit one note in the original game (though I did find part of an engaging gameplay loop for the game), and I imagine they're going to get weirder and more creative with them in this title. I also imagine the Darkness has gotten stronger since the first game and more creative. I kinda' suspect the gameplay itself will feel a lot more refined, and Remedy has action games in their blood, I don't expect that to be gone, just more restrained with a more vulnerable protagonist and scenario. I kinda' suspect you'll still have the gun gameplay, light shining mechanics, just with a deeper focused on limited items and more options than shooting down everything. I don't imagine this genre shift is them completely disregarding the first games mechanics, and survival-horror since its origin has been about item management and choosing your battles (except when you have to fight due to narrative reasons). Ultimately, it all depends on what Sam Lake thinks of survival-horror, and their take on survival-horror, but as they were very adamant the original Alan Wake wasn't a horror game and more an action-thriller, I feel pretty confident in saying they're taking the genre shift pretty seriously, and the challenges of that genre they seem quite excited to tackle, which I think is good it's creatively interesting for them. Most mechanics that many would define as part of survival-horror are all there to help the atmosphere and more limited feeling of your character. A very good example is the classic Resident Evil games give you more than enough supplies to handle anything that comes your way in reality, but due to how the mechanics work and their finite nature, it's more important they give a feeling of finality and choice which supports the games atmosphere and narrative confines for the situation. That part is what interests me the most, because the whole point of survival-horror mechanics is to utilize mechanics to create a feeling. I notice Sam Lake put a lot of emphasis on talking about his vision to use survival-horror mechanics and story-telling, feeling the genre provides interesting ways to tell a story. And for Alan Wake 2, their term they're using is a psychological survival-horror. If I recall correctly, their exact term for it at the time was a psychological action thriller.
